On June 24, 2016, Director James B. Comey, Jr. named Robert Allan Jones as Assistant Director for the FBI’s Weapons of Mass Destruction Directorate. On behalf of the FBI, he leads USG law enforcement and domestic intelligence efforts to prevent and neutralize WMD threats against the US Homeland and interests abroad. His vision is to build an enduring, integrated, and agile USG capability to effectively prevent and neutralize all WMD threats.
Mr. Jones entered on duty as a Special Agent of the FBI in September 1996. He first reported to the Detroit Division in the Kalamazoo Resident Agency, where he investigated drug, violent crime, white collar crime, and terrorism cases. While there, he was a member of the SWAT team and received the Director’s Award for the dismantlement of a domestic terrorist group planning to attack federal, state, and local authorities.
In 2002, Mr. Jones was promoted to Supervisory Special Agent in the Usama Bin Laden Unit of the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division. He provided oversight and guidance to multiple field offices conducting investigations into Sunni extremism matters. Mr. Jones was promoted to Unit Chief in 2003.
In 2004, Mr. Jones was promoted to Supervisory Senior Resident Agent in the Rochester Resident Agency of the Buffalo Division, supervising all criminal and cyber investigative programs.
In 2007, Mr. Jones was assigned to a classified, one-year tour in Balad, Iraq, with the United States Special Operations Command. The next year, he was promoted to Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Cleveland Division, where he held responsibilities for the Intelligence and Counterintelligence programs.
In 2009, Mr. Jones reported to Kabul, Afghanistan, as the Legal Attaché. Upon his return to the United States in 2011, he was promoted to Section Chief in the Counterintelligence Division at FBI Headquarters.
On July 30, 2012, Director Robert S. Mueller III named Mr. Jones as Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Indianapolis Division. In 2014, Mr. Jones returned to FBIHQ as Deputy Assistant Director for Counterintelligence.
Born near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Mr. Jones received a bachelor’s degree in Administration of Justice from the Pennsylvania State University in 1986 and a Master’s Degree in Social Science from Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Public Affairs in 1996. Mr. Jones served as a U.S. Marine Corps infantry officer before joining the FBI.
